If you love pushing your body to the limits in the gym or outdoors, a fitness trainer is probably a natural fit for you. Working as a fitness trainer can help you share your enthusiasm for exercise with others and help them on their own fitness journeys.

Life as a fitness trainer is a breath of fresh air for people tired of desk work. You may spend time indoors at a gym, or your local beach or park could become your office. You’ll work closely with clients and feel a great sense of personal achievement as you help them transform their bodies and meet their fitness goals. You can also enjoy flexible hours if you work as an independent fitness trainer rather than a gym or fitness organization employee.

Fitness trainers working in the United States need certification from an official National Commission for Certifying Agencies–accredited body such as the Academy of Applied Personal Training Education, American College of Sports Medicine, or the National Council on Strength & Fitness.

Criminal Investigator: Crack the Case in the Field

Criminal investigators can spend time in the field gathering the evidence attorneys need to land favorable settlements for their clients. Since no two cases are the same, the job is always changing, which ensures that criminal investigators are constantly challenged.

Educational requirements vary significantly. Some criminal investigators have only a high school diploma, while others require an associate or bachelor’s degree in a related area such as criminology or criminal justice. In addition to any agency requirements, criminal investigators need law enforcement certification from Peace Officers Standards and Training or a state-based standards and training commission.

Veterinarian: Care for Animals Great and Small

Becoming a veterinarian is the ideal job for any animal lover who doesn’t want to be bound to a desk. Veterinarians treat patients large and small, from ordinary house pets to zoo animals. While some parts of the job are routine, such as neutering pets and administering vaccines, vets may often find themselves facing other situations. When animals are hit by cars or ingest poison, dedicated vets help them survive. Many vets spend their time in their clinics, while others make calls to animal shelters, zoos, rescue facilities, and other animal organizations.

Veterinarians need a bachelor’s degree, usually in biological science, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. They must also pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam. Many states also have their own state-specific examinations. While gaining the necessary qualifications takes time, vets in the United States earn impressive annual salaries of $88,770, according to 2016 figures from the U.S. BLS.

If the nine-to-five grind is wearing you down, leave your desk for more dynamic opportunities. It’s never too late to find a new career.
